Example

Example: five blog post titles turned into URL slugs, accents and a repeat included

A food blog moving to a new site needs a URL for each post. The titles are pasted one per line, with the settings as the page opens: Hyphen, All lower case on, letters outside the Latin alphabet not kept, Longest: No limit. The Crème Brûlée title is in the list twice.

  1. Accents are folded to the letter underneath: Crème Brûlée becomes creme-brulee. Danish and German letters take their usual spellings: Smørrebrød becomes smoerrebroed, Glühwein gluehwein.
  2. Anything that is not a letter or a digit is dropped and the gap becomes one hyphen: the ampersand, the brackets, the colon, the full stop, the question mark and the £ sign.
  3. The repeated title gets -2 at the end, so the two posts cannot end up at the same URL.
  4. With Longest set to 40 characters, each slug is cut back to the last hyphen before the limit, never in the middle of a word.

Five slugs and five different URLs, counted as 5 slugs, ready to paste into the URL or permalink field of each post. The longest, at 50 characters, is the Nordic menu; with the 40-character limit it ends at …-a-nordic.

How it works

  1. Paste the titles, one per line.
  2. Choose a hyphen or an underscore. Hyphens are what search engines expect.
  3. Set a length if your URLs have one; it cuts at a word rather than mid-word.
  4. Copy the slugs.

Frequently asked questions

How are accents handled?
Folded to the letter underneath: café becomes cafe, Crème Brûlée creme-brulee. German and Nordic letters take the spellings those languages use instead: ü becomes ue, ß becomes ss, ø becomes oe and å becomes aa, so Glühwein is gluehwein, Großmutter grossmutter and Smørrebrød smoerrebroed — what a German or Danish reader expects to see, rather than gluhwein.
Can a slug be in Japanese?
Yes, and it is perfectly legal. Turn on “keep letters outside the Latin alphabet” and the characters stay; browsers show them properly and only the raw URL looks encoded. It reads far better than a transliteration.
What if two titles give the same slug?
The second gets a -2, the third a -3. A list of titles usually becomes a list of URLs, and two of those must not be the same.
Why does it cut at a word?
Because a slug cut mid-word reads as a typo. With a length set, the slug goes back to the last separator before the limit: at 40 characters, creme-brulee-vs-panna-cotta-which-is-easier becomes creme-brulee-vs-panna-cotta-which-is. Only when that separator falls in the first half of the limit, as with one very long word, is the word itself cut.
Hyphens or underscores?
Hyphens, unless your system asks for underscores. Search engines read a hyphen as a space between words, which is why Hyphen is preselected; Underscore gives creme_brulee_vs_panna_cotta_which_is_easier for file names or code that need it.
What happens to £, &, brackets and other symbols?
They are dropped, and the space they leave becomes a single separator: “10 Best Fish & Chip Shops in Cornwall (2026 Guide)” gives 10-best-fish-chip-shops-in-cornwall-2026-guide, and “£5 Lunches” gives 5-lunches. A line made only of symbols, such as “!!!”, has nothing left and says so instead of giving an empty slug.
Is anything sent to a server?
No. It runs in your browser, so what you paste stays on your computer.
